Session 1: What is Needed to Build Safety in Kind Community?
Credits: 90 minutes / 1.5 CEUs
Description of training: Strong relationships are built on our agreed-upon rights and our shared commitment to uphold them together. But first, we have to know what our wants, preferences, and rights are! In this session we will help each other define and practice our boundaries, consent, rights to privacy, communication, and preferences that will function to make strong, kind community possible. Folks will get to take home a toolkit that they can build upon beyond the conference day. Building kind community begins with people coming to clear, shared agreements about how we want to be treated and how we will treat each other. This session will lay the groundwork for the following session “Practicing Kind Skills Together!”
Handouts: Relational toolkit, levels of intimacy, prompts for how to make connections during lunchtime
Practicing Kind Skills Together!
Credits: 90 minutes / 1.5 CEUs
Description of training: This session supports folks to practice kind skills together in real time, using a Universal Design approach that supports access and participation for everybody. In a low-stakes and non-performative way, folks will practice active listening, experimenting with the “free pass,” expressing boundaries and saying “no,” and exploring how to offer feedback that helps others to identify and meet their unmet needs. Folks will be supported in creating personalized cue cards that communicate their specific needs, boundaries, and preferences that they can take home with them to strengthen their ability to foster safe kind connections with others in their daily life.
